Contacting extensometers are usually, but not always, removed before break to prevent shocks to the extensometer when the test piece breaks. The idea being that you use the extensometer to obtain Young's Modulus, Proof Stress, Yield strain etc but do not need it for UTS. Tinius olsen software will prompt the operator to remove the extensometer at pre-specified point.
