Answer

ATG Training are an engineering training establishment teaching BTEC level 3 and HNC units for the apprenticeship scheme. We have a Hounsfield tensometer with a good range of associated equipment, extensometers, collets and test peices but this machine has developed a leak in the mercury tube and therefore cannot be used by anyone least of all students. Can the flexible tube that is leaking be replaced and can the mercury be replaced with a safer alternative?

ANSWER

Thank you for your question.

As you are aware there are serious health and safety concerns regarding the use of mercury. I recommend you to consult a health and safety expert for further advice.

Unfortunately Tinius Olsen is not able to offer support or spares for these machines. However, if you email your contact details to sales@tiniusolsen.co.uk we can put you in touch with a Company that does support the old W type machine. Personally, I would consider replacing the machine with a new one that meets all current health and safety requirements. If you would like further information, please contact the Sales Dept at Tinius Olsen Ltd.

I hope this helps,

Regards,

David
